Communicative competence has been adapted in the educational field for several years as a set of skills that students are expected to develop. However, the reality is that this concept of communicative competence presents certain ambiguities, due to the contributions —mainly from Chomsky and Hymes— in the field of linguistics, who have supported or criticized the term since the 1970s. Therefore, this article aims to analyze the characteristics of the selected studies that focus on communicative competence as their object of study. To this end, four primary sources were selected, and the sources they used in their theoretical frameworks were reviewed. The characteristics identified through this review and subsequent analysis are related to publication date, textual genre, language, and author. It is concluded that this term, originally coined in linguistics, was initially developed from both generative and functional approaches, and was later adopted by education, albeit without a clear decision regarding the preferred approach.
