Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to describe the experiences of psychoanalytic psychotherapists using telepsychology during the COVID-19 pandemic. A qualitative approach with a phenomenological design was employed, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 psychoanalytic psychotherapists who provided therapy during the pandemic. The results are categorized into four themes: The experience of transitioning to virtual practice and the associated changes, Psychoanalytic psychotherapy techniques during the pandemic, The period followed by the return to in-person sessions and the skills required for telepsychology. The results showed that the participants' experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic were initially marked by feelings of uncertainty and doubt about what to do and how to employ the psychoanalytic technique. The participants expressed different nuances of their experience and acknowledged the importance of adapting to this new form of care, discovering that it was possible to conduct psychoanalytic psychotherapy virtually. Similarly, the participants consider the hybrid modality—that is, both virtual and in-person—to be a standard of care. Finally, the participants believe that to utilize tele psychology, one must have a setting well established, to be prepared for any situation that might arise during analysis sessions.
