The present study aimed to understand the coping styles of university students in metropolitan Lima following a relationship breakup. A sequential explanatory mixed-method design (DEXPLIS) was used, administering the Relationship Breakup Coping Strategies Scale (ESARA) to 140 participants and complementing it with semi-structured interviews with five students. The quantitative results showed a predominance of direct coping, followed by avoidance coping, and, to a lesser extent, seeking support from others. Statistical analyses revealed significant differences by sex, with greater use of direct coping among women, and variation by age, with younger students tending to employ active and social support strategies, while older students showed more heterogeneous patterns. In the second phase, the findings were corroborated through semi-structured interviews with five participants. The qualitative analysis allowed us to delve deeper into the students' subjective experiences, showing that direct coping resulted in self-care and redefining actions, support from others was reflected in the search for support networks, and avoidance resulted in distracting behavior or isolation. The integration of both phases allowed for a broader understanding of the phenomenon, demonstrating that coping styles are shaped by individual and sociocultural factors and constitute essential resources for emotional reorganization and the development of resilience in the face of emotional loss.
