The objective of this research was to determine the beliefs linked to the beginning of adolescent sexual relations in a group of mothers from the distric of San Juan de Lurigancho. A qualitative methodology was used and the group of participants was constituted by women between 42 and 54 years old. The results show the existence of beliefs that disapprove that the first sexual relationship occurs in adolescence, since the adolescents are considered by the participants as immature people and incapable of responding responsibly to sexual initiation. Likewise, the participants consider that the reasons and characteristics of sexual iniciation are different between men and women, the differences described by them show the presence of beliefs related to gender stereotypes and male chauvinism. Finally, regarding family communication about adolescent sexual initiation, the testimonies show little openness, fear or shame when talking about sexual issues with teenage sons and daughters.
