The present research seeks to elucidate whether William James' theory of truth allows for a rational justification of Christian-Protestant religiosity. For this purpose, it is based on the analyses written by this author in his works Pragmatism and The Meaning of Truth, in connection with other of his writings. However, the criticisms made by Richard Rorty, Susan Hack and Hilary Putnam will allow us to reformulate James' thesis by interpreting that where he speaks of "truth" he is referring rather to the concept of "conviction". Two central ideas are then developed. The first consists of demonstrating the compatibility between the pragmatic theory of conviction and evangelicalism. The second explains the link between this pragmatics and biblical hermeneutics, expressed in the Protestant principle of Sola Scriptura. Thus, it will be the philosophy of Paul Ricoeur that will provide the conceptual mediations to justify this connection.
