This research presents a philosophical-political reinterpretation of the meeting between Jürgen Habermas and Joseph Ratzinger at the Bavarian Catholic Academy in 2004. For these purposes, the relationship between the concepts of secularization and the ethos of the liberal state is analyzed. In this way, the work questions whether it is possible to base the liberal state from a secular perspective, that is, uprooted from religion. Thus, the main finding is that through a theological-political analysis, it can be understood with greater accuracy that the discussion on the ethos of the liberal state is not only permeated by secular elements; but, besides, of Christian ideas, that is to say, of theological-political concepts. Therefore, the main contribution is the study of the meeting between Habermas and Ratzinger not only as a separate dialogue; but, fundamentally, as a theological-political debate with profound consequences for the disciplines of political science and modern constitutionalism, something that has not been developed until today in international academia.
