This research aimed to describe the profile of independent counselors in family businesses in Peru. Methodologically, it employed a quantitative approach with a non-experimental, cross-sectional, and descriptive research design. A non-probabilistic convenience sampling was used, including 61 family businesses. The data collection instrument was developed in-house and validated by expert judgment, achieving an Aiken’s V of 0.92. A pilot test was conducted with a reliability of 0.978. Key conclusions highlight that personal attributes are more valued than professional credentials in the independent counselors hired by family businesses. The most sought-after qualities include multiple soft skills, the ability to contribute neutral and innovative perspectives from an external viewpoint, ethical conduct, and a guarantee of performance. The most demanded professions are organizational psychologist, administrator, industrial engineer, accountant, economist, crisis management expert, and marketing specialist. These counselors are primarily required to promote the development of the family business and to manage governance norms and the standardization of organizational procedures.
