Abstract
Abstract
In Peru, Quechua-speaking students face a monolingual education system that generates language anxiety. The purpose of this study is to understand how students experience and interpret linguistic anxiety and how it relates to their self-concept, interpersonal relationships, academic performance, and coping strategies of Quechua-speaking elementary school students at a public school from the province of Tayacaja, in the department of Huancavelica. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach and a phenomenological design, employing in-depth interviews with a sample of 20 Quechua-speaking students aged 6 to 12. The results reveal the presence of linguistic anxiety manifested in feelings of self-rejection and fear of failure, stemming from persistent difficulties in communicating and articulating Spanish. These experiences generate fear of segregation and lead students to perceive themselves as incompetent in the eyes of their Spanish-speaking peers and teachers. This emotional dynamic translates into a wide range of negative emotions, such as insecurity, frustration, discouragement, and tension, which significantly affect the students’ well-being and academic performance. It is concluded that linguistic anxiety in Quechua-speaking schoolchildren is expressed through a marked pattern of inhibition, negative self-concept, and fear of academic failure, resulting in a profoundly adverse impact on their educational experience.Description
